A new book, "Ichi karano Shouhin Keikaku (Product Development from A to Z)," that Chiho Sasaki contributed as a coauthor will be published in February from Sekigakusya. Chiho wrote a chapter about "Observation methods."

For all of you who have been affected by the Eastern Japan Great Earthquake, our thoughts and prayers are with you. We wish for the earliest recovery in the devastated areas.

After the earthquake, we received many caring messages from our friends overseas. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for your thoughts. Fortunately, our office was not damaged badly, and we are now back to our normal work schedule.

But the critical situation continues around the nuclear power plants, and our hearts ache for people who live within their vicinity. The photo of the beautiful Fukushima is on our top page so that the thoughts of as many people as possible would be gathered there. It is the dawn at a camp ground in Fukushima, photographed in 2003. We pray that the smiles will return one day soon to these beautiful seaside towns and other earthquake affected areas.

Our workshop at the EPIC 2010 was a big success!
As part of the EPIC 2010 in Tokyo, we hosted a workshop entitled "Lost in translation? How to get the most out of cross-cultural ethnographic research" on August 31st.
Passion for cross-cultural ethnography brought more than twenty people from home and abroad in a hot summer morning at International Design Liaison Center in Roppongi. In a densely-packed three hour program, we conducted mock observations of office workers, discussed issues unique to cross-cultural situation, and together discovered possible operation guidelines for future cross-cultural researches. All participants brought their unique international experiences, which made our discussions even more fruitful and inspiring. We thank all the participants who picked our workshop out of the equally inviting twelve EPIC workshops and contributed their unique perspectives and passion.

Chiho Sasaki spoke about human-centered design (HCD) approach in product/service development at a seminar hosted by the Japan Marketing Association.
Professor H. Nishikawa of Hosei University School of Business coordinated the event held on July 23rd, with the main topic "Why product development fails?" The event tried to explore key success factors when employing innovative methodologies such as HCD and crowd sourcing into traditional product development process.
Chiho was also invited to the panel discussion, where she enjoyed straight talks with other speakers and audience around how we challenge existing process and protocol in order to get the most out of more innovative design methodology.

The EPIC 2010, the global conference around ethnography, will be held in Tokyo coming August. Chiho Sasaki, our President is serving as the co-chair of local committee to host this event.

The first EPIC was held in 2005 in Redmond with the goal of promoting ethnography in business practice, which has been gaining attention as a tool for innovation in product and service development arena. The sixth EPIC this year set the theme of 'Do,' a Japanese word depicting a body of knowledge and tradition with ethic and aesthetic, and will discuss extensively about effectiveness and issues around ethnography when applied in the real-world business.

We at infield design see ethnography as an important tool in our experience design process. Therefore we are planning to share our thoughts with as many people as possible at the conference.
